Dear Tom,

I loved the mild December we just experienced in Chicago. Where could I move to where last month's weather would be the December norm?

—Ben Cleveland, Chicago

Dear Ben,

Chicago's very mild December closed out 7.5 degrees above normal. It featured high temperatures that averaged in the lower 40s, overnight lows in the upper 20s and less than 2 inches of snow. A similar December would be typical in many years in areas about 300 to 400 miles south of Chicago, in such cities like Paducah and Louisville, Ky.; Evansville, Ind.; and St. Louis. Looking beyond the southern Midwest, regions with comparable December weather would include areas along and south of the Ohio River from Virginia to extreme southeast Missouri.
